I live in illinois and my birthday's on leap day and it's legally on friday March 1st. I'm jealous you get to celebrate in february! I'm turning 21 too.

Very cool! Sucks that your birthday is on March 1st though, I guess Washington State is just better! It’s always great to meet others with a leap day birthday :)

There should be a support group for us having to deal with people saying “so you’re only 5 oh my gosh you’re the biggest baby I’ve ever seen!”

Screens..

..are what I look at all day, every day. From the moment I wake up to the moment I fall asleep, I am looking at a screen.

It’s a scary and sad thing to realize and acknowledge, yet it is also good to admit so I can work towards changing that (yet as I type that, it’s not being significantly changed).

Since realizing that my life is to consume screens I started to take some small (read: extremely small) steps to use my spare time away from a screen.

My typical weekday -

Wake up to an alarm on my phone and/or computer. Look at screen(s) to check notifications and spend a few minutes browsing the internet.
Get ready for work. No screens really involved in this.
Drive to work. No screens really involved here either unless I hear a notification on my phone. My commute, 30-60m each way, is one of the few times where I take solace in not looking at a screen and am able to just think.
Work for 8~ hours on the computer, all the while browsing FB/Reddit here and there throughout the day.
Drive home, or to school to do schoolwork for 2 hours.
Browse the internet and watch a few shows.
Fall asleep to Netflix.

Writing that out is pretty difficult because it’s still hard to admit how much of my life is just absorbing light from a screen. Like I said earlier though, I am trying to make some small steps to start changing that.

Most people will bring their smart phone to the bathroom but sometimes I’ll deliberately avoid that and bring a book or magazine instead.

When I go to lunch I order whatever it is that I’m going to eat and, by impulse, I pull out my phone while I wait. I noticed this and started to make myself not pull my phone out and just look outside and at my surroundings.

I guess it’s hard to avoid looking at screens when your job and school require it but it just kinda sucks. Maybe it’s not wrong to be completely consumed by screens since that is the direction the world is going, but it just feels wrong to me. I know that I should use my free time off the computer but it’s very difficult to change when I’ve been doing it since my Freshman year of High School which was in 2006, 7 years ago.
